"Though I work in a variety of materials, chalk and oil pastels are my preferences. Feeling the pastel under my fingers, and the texture of the paper or canvas, I become closer to my work. Brushes just get in my way! This series of portraits are all done in oil pastel on a variety of supports, making for a variety of effects. The longer I draw, the less conscious I become of what I am drawing, which makes it hard to put into words for the viewer why I do what I do artistically. I suppose drawing is the way I make sense of the world. Portraits are one extension of this, since I am attempting to pull you inside the world of the individual in the picture. My job as an artist is done if the picture makes you feel."
