Claire McLarney
Afterimage/Aftermath

Afterimage/Aftermath combines my interest in appropriation and two-dimensional architectural space found within a three dimensional architectural space. Josef Albers originally created the imagery of this installation in a series of small prints entitled Structural Constellations, realized in the late 1950's. This piece critiques Albers use of color as building blocks to create perceptual phenomenon, but his choices are arbitrary. This work questions modernist color theory and Albers' use of specific colors, hues and tones by distilling the structure of the image without the randomness of color.

Afterimage/Aftermath highlights my pursuit in art that has a specific relationship to the architecture of the space; this is a product of research on the artist Sol Lewitt who redefined the nature of walls. Not only do walls act as a supporting structure for works to be hung on, but should be considered fundamental to the creation of the work. The layout of the foyer is integral to the reading of this installation and largely influenced the conceptual formation of the final product. Claire McLarney, August 5, 2004 redefines the image by placing it within the space of the room with an altered medium and physical relationship to the viewer, creating a departure point for new ideas and interpretations.
