Joy   by   Veronika Funk

“We came to better understand love and joy
and beauty so that we could celebrate these
good things and do them justice.” – Mary Pratt

In a world that can be chaotic I find refuge in my home and take pleasure in creating ‘vignettes’ around me. Depicting subject matter that is extremely important to me means that I never tire of it. Rendering the same subject matter many times helps me to see each item in a new way – reflected light, shape, colour. I am passionate about God and spirituality and focus on the importance of sacred spaces, appreciating the blessing of simple pleasures in life. In a chaotic world, I want to bring peace. In times of sorrow, I want to bring some happiness. Every day should be a celebration of the joy of life – of the simple things.

Biography

For many years I struggled to find my ‘metier’ as an artist, switching from watercolour, stone carving, pottery, printmaking, and sculpture to painting in oil and acrylic and work on glass. I now realize that all of these experiences have led to a better understanding of form and colour, and have ultimately made my work stronger. After formal training in Alberta and Manitoba, and much relocating across the prairies, I searched for my niche, attempting to work in a way that was a unique expression of who I am and trying to do work that would “speak” on its own. Finally, a number of years ago I was given a book entitled “The Artist’s Way” written by Julia Cameron. It was an epiphany. I learned to paint for myself and to focus on subject matter that is important to me, the things that surround me, books, a comfortable chair, the sanctuary of home.
