Artist statement

I am a self-taught photographer with over 10 years experience in many forms of photography, and have won awards for photojournalism, landscape and commercial work. I have explored several different artistic styles and medium within the photographic field, including black and white, infrared, and Polaroid manipulation. The one element that I have been most fascinated with is the use and manipulation of color. Color helps create emotion in artwork, and the ability to manipulate color in photography is limited, and therefore highly challenging.

Several years ago, I learned unique flash and light painting techniques that I found very exciting. Since then I have attempted to develop the basic techniques into a style influenced by Impressionism. This method involves using normal objects, people, and places as subjects, and then transforming them into a surreal and impressionistic rendering on film using an assortment of flashlights, electronic flashes, and colored gels. I specifically aim to create an impressionistic pattern of bright, saturated colors with a bit of cubist form. I create the initial work in E-6 transparency format film and scan to computer for minor touch up with the final output to photographic print.
