A Cow Roamed the Hudson's Bay Reserve, by Helen Richards [Norwood memoir]

Princess, the Jersey cow, flourished on the Hudson Bay Reserve.

Behind Morage Row (97th Street between 111th and 118th Avenues) from 101 Street to Kingsway was the Hudson Bay Reserve. Huge meadows, pockets of bush. They were called Bay ground 1 and Bay ground 2. My mother was a country girl from Latvia who in their spare time looked after the animals.

Five growing children drank lots of milk, so a Jersey cow was bought and tethered out on Bay ground 1. A drain was put in our garage and that is where our Jersey white cow named Princess was milked. Our Princess flourished on the grass of the HB Reserve and produced lots of milk. Too much for us to use.

The Edmonton City Dairy thought my mother was selling milk to the neighbors, which she was; when it got dark my mom would put milk in our neighbors milk bin. The odd time someone would pull the stake out and we had to go out and look for her.
