My Edmonton, by Nora Moore

Date: 1920's

I was born in Edmonton and most of my near relatives lived here. My dad’s sister worked in Wetaskiwin and married a young man whose family (father, mother, and brother) lived in Clinton. They needed to help on the farm there. Dad’s youngest sibling stayed in Edmonton with their mother.

Dad and Mom were married 1922. Mom’s father and mother were from Ontario and moved here, lived on a large lot in east Edmonton on 118th Avenue. So we stayed here, married here and had our families here. Started working here.

When we went to school, we walked from 11634 – 83 Street to Cromdale School. I walked with my mom to learn the route we had to take to get to the three-storied, clapboard house which was getting too small for the increasing population in the area. I was six years old (1929). The classrooms were small. We had fun learning to read, print and do art, still my favorite subject.

Edmonton still has not grown up yet – in the art world.
